Place Setting Project
Artist Statement
The project that I worked on this unit is called the place settings project. During this project, I had to design at least three pots, consisting of a plate, a cup, and a bowl. In order to achieve the look that I want, I decided to go for a cup, two bowls, and a plate. After I fired and sanded my pots, I glazed my pots with high fire glaze. Instead of using a single glaze color, I mixed two different high fire glazes and achieved a dark navy color with a hint of sky blue.
While working on this project, my main goal was to make my pots in the convenient size to achieve a comfortable balance when they are placed next to each other. In order to again fulfill my goal of making the pots appear balanced and comfortable for the eyes to look at, I used a subtle dark color to glaze them.
To get started on the project, I went through a lot of pictures related to place settings on Pinterest. Upon searching for different examples of place settings, I was able to discover certain patterns. Many of them were unified through having similar colors or patterns. Then, I was inspired to color my pots in the same color to make them all unified. Similar sizes were also used to unify the pots so I also took that into consideration.
From this project I was able to get across the purpose of achieving a balanced, unified pairs of pots that appears nice to the eye when arranged appropriately. Through this project, I was able to learn how to take different pots and make them appear unified in some way. I was always just used to making a single pot that did not need to be related to other pots. However, working on a project that involved many different pots and required unification taught me how to think about more than just a single pot, but about other pots.
