Sculptural Response 2 Artist Statement:
This project was the second sculptural response of the year. For this project, we had to choose a music/ poetry/ literary piece and use different concepts such as slab, coil or pinch to create a sculptural response piece.
For the project, I decided to use the music, "Old MacDonald Had A Farm," to create a sculptural response with the slab technique. After listening to the music, I decided to create a farmhouse where farm animals stay. I used approximately three different colors to paint the farmhouse.
In order to make the slab house appear more like a farmhouse, I used subtractive texture to make the sides of the farmhouse appear like wood pieces. Also, I used subtractive texture on the roof as well to make the roof look like it is made up of bricks. In order to add more detailing to the farmhouse, I carved out windows and a door on the sides, as well as subtractive detailing of a door and windows in the front of the house.
From working on this project, I was able to use a lot of different techniques such as additive and subtractive texture, and the use of slabs to create a slab house. I personally felt that this project allowed me to review some of my favorite pot building techniques.
