Artist Statement
To create the slab pot, I first sketched the design in my sketchbook. Then, I took pieces of paper and created a model of the pot that I wanted to create. This was so that I could cut up my slab pieces according to the model to allow the pieces to fit. After my model was created, I rolled out a slab through the slab roller and took apart my paper model. Then I cut out my slab according to my paper model. Then, I used slip to attach the separate pieces of slab to create my slab pot. After the main shape was created, I used coils to add additive relief. I used straight coils and slips to add the additive relief. Then, I used carving tools to add subtractive relief by carving the slabs in. After the pot dried a little I used the knife to create the lid that looked like a door.
The main theme of my slab pot was candy land! I wanted to make a circus-looking ring with colorful colors to create a very bright, happy looking pot. Because the pots that I have made so far were all very monotone and colorless (black, white, red, etc), I really wanted to make the slab pot a very bright and vibrant one by using such colors, and using a happy tone. When people look at my pot, I want them to get the image of “candy-late” and something happy and perhaps something from their childhood movies. I think, my selection of colors was very successful in that when I look at my pot, I can see the vibrant colors and think of the image that I envisioned when I sketched my pot. I think through this project, I learned how to use vibrant colors when glazing my pots, and learned how to use different techniques that I learned throughout the year, including coils, slabs, slips, and etc in a single pot for this project. It was a good review as well as a great experience.
