Sculptural Response Project
Still Life with Basket by Paul Cézanne
Artist Statement
For this assignment I had to choose a 2-dimensional artwork from any time period by any artist to create a sculptural response to the piece. I was allowed to use whatever technique such as slab, coil, wheel throwing or etc. to create my sculptural response. I used a book with a variety of 2 dimensional artworks to choose the piece that I wanted to work with. After choosing Paul Cézanne’s Still Life with Basket, I immediately decided to create a fruit basket.
To begin with, I first decided to make three apples, a lemon, a watermelon, and two tangerines. After deciding on what I wanted to create, I decided on the colors and also thought about making a basket out of slabs. This was a big concern of mine but I solved the problem by bringing in a pre-made basket from home. Since my basket did not have a handle, I used wooden wires to create a handle.
For my fruits, I took two pinch pots and put them together to create a ball and I also hollowed it out. When this got difficult, I just created a ball and simply hollowed it out. From this project, I was able to learn how to color, arrange, and display many different pots (fruits) into a basket to make it look appealing to the eyes. I developed different ways to solve problems by making small changes to my plans instead of altering everything.
